David and Mary Haslam are Senior Services’ Volunteers of the Month for their outstanding service as Meals on Wheels drivers. “They are dedicated and are here every week,” states Michele Burkett, Food Service Coordinator. Michele adds, “They are always happy and helpful.”
Meals on Wheels drivers constitute the largest group within our volunteer ranks. There are approximately 182 active Meals on Wheels drivers. There are 20 Meals on Wheels routes throughout Midland County and meals are delivered Monday through Friday. These volunteers do more than just deliver a meal – they bring friendly smiles and are an outside contact – something very much appreciated by the clients they serve.
David and Mary have been serving as volunteers since May of 2016 and have over 1,111 volunteer hours between them. The Haslams deliver meals once a week together. David in the past was a transportation driver for the agency. “We can do this volunteering together,” explains Mary. “We enjoy helping others and giving back to our community.” Elizabeth Baldwin, Nutrition Systems Coordinator, says that “They are volunteers we can count on to be very thorough and efficient with delivery and documentation including any client concerns.”
Originally from South Carolina, David and Mary moved to Midland, 39 years ago. They moved the same year they got married for their jobs with Dow. They are blessed with a son and a daughter. They enjoy snowshoeing and cross country skiing when they aren’t volunteering.
“Senior Services provides a critical need for clients and without it, people wouldn’t be able to remain in their homes” concludes David.
The Meals on Wheels program provides nutritious, well-balanced meals delivered to the senior’s home by a volunteer. An older adult can find comfort in knowing that a good meal and a friendly face will come with every visit. If you are interested in this service or would like to volunteer as a Meals on Wheels driver, call Senior Services at (989) 633-3700.
Thank you, David and Mary, for your volunteer spirit. We really appreciate your continued dedication.
