David Skiendziel has been driving for Senior Services’ Transportation Program since 2009, accumulating over 1,065 hours! He has been chosen as our Volunteer of the Month for August. David had read about our volunteer opportunities and decided that Transportation was the “best fit” for him. He explains, “I like to drive and help others. The rest is history.” Trish Brown, Transportation Manager, speaks very highly of David. “He is a very conscientious person, always concerned about our clients and their needs. David takes the time to share with the Transportation staff any client issues or information needed to help a client. He is trained with wheelchairs and other equipment that clients have and is always willing to help.” David says, “A lot of the clients are younger than me now but that doesn’t make a difference. I will continue to help until I can’t do it anymore.”
David retired as a Manufacturing Supervisor from GM in 1998. He was born and raised in Saginaw. He and his wife, Susan have been married for 54 years and moved to Midland in 2015. They have 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. David is an active Mason and enjoys riding his step through cycle.
Transportation Drivers use agency vehicles to take older adults to medical appointments within Midland County. Drivers must have a good driving record with a kind and courteous attitude toward our clients. We offer “door to door” service with an arm to lean on! How would David encourage others to volunteer for Senior Services? “Find something you like to do and volunteer that way to help others. Most people have time on their hands.”
Thank you, David, for your 15 years of service to the older adults of Midland County and congratulations on being chosen as Volunteer of the Month! We Need Volunteer Helpers!
Senior Services is always in need of volunteers. If you choose to volunteer with us, you will be embarking on a rewarding adventure that will have a huge impact on the older adults of Midland County! We hope you’ll consider joining our team of experienced, trusted and valued volunteers.
Our current areas of greatest need are:
- Friendly Visitors/Shopping Volunteers – Visit, call, shop and more for an older adult in need. This is a great opportunity for working people and is flexibly scheduled.
- Senior Safety Team – Assist older adults in keeping their homes in a safe and secure condition by performing jobs and monthly services. Time commitment would be 1 to 2 days per month. Mileage is reimbursed.
- Transportation Drivers – Our volunteer drivers provide “arm to lean on” door-to-door service throughout the entire county of Midland making it easier for older adults to get to doctor’s appointments, a ride to the grocery store, and more.
- Meals on Wheels in Greendale and Coleman routes – Routes available M-F from 10 am-1 pm. Mileage is reimbursed and you’ll receive a FREE lunch!
