by Allison Rossi Utter, Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager
Senior Services is proud to recognize Shirley Herron as our Volunteer of the Month for August for her assistance at Greendale Activity and Dining Center. A true pillar of our community, Shirley brings warmth, dedication, and a contagious smile to everything she does. “Shirley is a powerhouse of strength, love, and compassion,” shares Greendale Site Manager, Myra Post. “She’s the first to lend a hand, always has a beautiful smile on her face, and her sense of humor lights up the entire room. You can count on her 100%—every single time.” Shirley first came to Greendale Center in 2011 after the passing of her husband, Bud. “I was looking for something to keep me active and a way to connect with others,” she says. “I just like to help wherever I can.” And help she does—whether it’s wiping down tables, tidying up after lunch, or rolling up her sleeves at special events like bake sales and pancake breakfasts, Shirley’s steady presence makes a big impact.
When she’s not volunteering at Greendale, Shirley continues her giving spirit through her church, Oil City Assembly. A longtime resident of the Shepherd area for over 60 years, she also enjoys reading, playing card games, and even mowing her own lawn!
Greendale is one of 5 Activity & Dining Centers where older adults gather to enjoy meals, socialize, and take part in crafts, games, and special events. Located at the West Midland Family Center (4011 West Isabella Road), Greendale is especially known for its creative programming and welcoming atmosphere. Other centers include Mills (at North Midland Family Center), Coleman, Sanford, and Trailside on Dublin Avenue—each with its own unique lineup of activities.
