By Julie Randolph, Information and Access Care Coordination Manager
The greatest experience of serving older adults is seeing lives enhanced when individuals engage in programs, services, resources, or the guidance and support of a Care Coordinator. We see barriers to independence, home safety, socialization, and freedom identified, lessened, and removed.
My sister once challenged me to make a “punch list” (like builders do). To list problems that need to be solved, including trivial things like testing smoke detectors, to large things like isolation, physical pain, or unmet needs that stop me from living with confidence and freedom. I was amazed at the number of things that I was carrying around, likened to the traveler in John Bunyan’s 1678 classic The Pilgrim’s Progress.
Avoiding looming problems can make life heavy and build unnecessary burden on every day. Waiting too long to get help can lead to lost opportunities and sometimes to irreparable damage. Oftentimes, resources are available that could easily solve current problems. Facing challenges can be easier with the help of Senior Services.
Sometimes our burdens become inextricable, so accepted that they grow into more of an extension of ourselves instead of a problem to solve. If you are stuck in this place, consider asking yourself:
- Are you not eating well because of difficulty shopping or preparing meals?
- Are you alone and isolated most days?
- Is your insurance coverage not meeting your needs?
- Is driving becoming more challenging?
- Do you limit your bathing or other activities because of fear of falling?
- Do you have a safety issue in your home that needs to be addressed?
- Are you caring for a loved one and needing a restorative break from time to time?
Think like a builder of your own life. Do not hesitate to ask for help. Our Care Coordination program is here for you! There is no reason to wait for a catastrophic event. Seek support proactively. We would love to help you knock out items on your “punch list.” Call us at (989) 633-3700.
