Safe storage and use of firearms as we age, require careful consideration. As physical, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional changes occur, so must our approach to firearm safety. The Firearm Life Plan Project encourages older adults to invite someone with firearm safety experience to a shooting range to provide feedback on how the older adult is handling and operating the firearm.
Vision and hearing loss, a decrease in grip strength, memory changes, and isolation can be warning signs that changes may be needed to ensure firearm safety.
Start a conversation with family members about establishing a plan for your firearms. Establish the owner’s intent for the firearm in the future.
