The process of receiving assistance for an ongoing or one-time need is unique to the individual, program requirements, and funding guidelines.
Be ready to tell your story: How did the need arise? What are your current circumstances? What is important to you? How have you managed in the past? What has changed? What are your values and goals in this situation?
Preparing: Before requesting assistance gather all income and asset information which will include checking and savings bank statements, investment account statements, proof of income such as annual Social Security Benefits Statement, pension, or employment pay-stub.
Maintain focus: Expect many questions and a lengthy process. Efforts may lead to remarkable success and other times to denial.
Biggest obstacle: Poor communication. If you are requesting assistance, you must be available when a call is placed to you in response to your need. Your participation in the process has the greatest impact. Make it easy for others to help you.
Pursue funding programs or resources that you are pre-qualified for, such as: VA benefit, health insurance benefit, disease related benevolent organizations, qualifying for a grant or a loan, eligibility for DHHS funding, using money saved, etc. Obtain two written estimates, from professionals, of the cost of the project or need.
Most importantly, manage your finances: Home and car maintenance are both to be expected. If you are living in a home or driving a car that you cannot afford to maintain, NOW is the time to make a change to a more affordable option. Safety nets are not meant for those living above their means. Assistance is for helping someone through an unforeseen crisis.
Playing offense: Request financial coaching or budget assistance at your financial institution. Meet with a financial advisor to plan for the future and discover ways to budget, invest, and protect or build your assets. Avoid impulsive purchases and scams by “sleeping on it” and discussing it with a trusted mentor. Accomplish cost savings by filing for Home Heating and Property Tax credits and exemptions, and by reviewing your health benefits annually.
Create a team: Whether you are needing a home repair, needing more services in your home, or taking the next step toward moving to a more supportive community, teamwork brings clarity. Stress, emergent concerns, fear of the unknown, and incorrect assumptions are all barriers when navigating new areas of life. Take the time to educate yourself and review options before making important decisions.
