There is something special about knowing the people who live nearby. Whether it’s a friendly wave, checking in after a storm, or sharing a conversation over coffee, being a good neighbor helps create a stronger, more connected community. During Neighboring Week, celebrated September 27 through October 3 in Midland County, we are reminded that small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
Being neighborly is about more than living next door to someone – it’s about building relationships, offering support, and creating a sense of belonging. For many older adults, a caring neighbor can provide companionship, help reduce feelings of loneliness, and even offer assistance with everyday tasks. These simple connections strengthen neighborhoods, improve well-being, and make our community a more welcoming place for everyone.
Neighboring Week is a wonderful opportunity to reach out and reconnect. You might introduce yourself to someone new, invite a neighbor over for coffee, share vegetables from your garden, help rake leaves, offer to pick up groceries, or simply stop by to ask how someone is doing. Even a smile, a wave, or a handwritten note can brighten someone’s day and remind them they are valued.
Strong neighborhoods are built one act of kindness at a time. When we take the time to care for those around us, we create safer, friendlier communities where people of all ages feel connected and supported. The friendships we build close to home often become some of life’s most meaningful relationships.
Senior Services is excited to celebrate Neighboring Week with our community! During September 27 through October 3, each of our Activity & Dining Centers will offer both you and your neighbor (or guest) a free meal ticket to enjoy lunch together. It’s the perfect opportunity to introduce someone to our local Centers, enjoy a delicious meal, and make a new connection. To help us prepare, please call the Activity & Dining Center you plan to attend to reserve your lunch by 9:00 a.m. on the day of your visit. We look forward to celebrating the spirit of being a good neighbor with you!
