by Allison Rossi Utter, Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager
We are pleased to recognize Geri Anderson as Senior Services’ Volunteer of the Month for December. For over two decades, Geri has been a familiar and friendly face at Greenhill Apartments, faithfully delivering meals and warm smiles to homebound older adults through the Meals on Wheels program. Since joining as a volunteer in September 2004, Geri has embodied the spirit of community service. She is dependable, compassionate, and deeply committed.
Geri first learned about Meals on Wheels from a newspaper article calling for volunteers. She remembers thinking, “Why couldn’t I do that?” That simple question sparked what would become more than 20 years of dedicated service. Even while working full-time as a Registered Nurse, Geri found time in her busy schedule to make a difference in the lives of others. Elizabeth Baldwin, Nutrition Systems Coordinator, shared her appreciation for Geri’s dedication, saying “I feel grateful to have Geri on our team. I have had the pleasure of delivering meals with her and it was clear the clients felt seen and cared for by Geri. The number of years she has delivered Meals on Wheels is a testament to her commitment to Senior Services’ mission to promote and enrich the quality of life for the people we serve.”
One of the things Geri enjoys most about volunteering is the structured, manageable schedule, in just a few hours each week that fit perfectly into her life. “It’s a set time commitment, and you know exactly what you’re doing,” she shares. “It’s such a rewarding way to spend a little time giving back.”
Geri was originally born in Ohio and raised in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. She moved to Midland in 1981 with her husband for his job. She has been married to John for 45 years, and together they have a son, a daughter, and two granddaughters. Geri is an active member of First United Methodist Church. She has led mission trips and is also a member of a local P.E.O. group. When she is not volunteering, Geri enjoys traveling, bike riding, walking, playing the flute and hand bells, and spending time with friends.
We are deeply grateful for Geri’s 21 years of service, compassion, and dedication to our community. Thank you, Geri, for all you do! You truly make a difference – one meal and one smile at a time.
