Diabetes is a complex disease that requires daily self-management—making healthy food choices, staying physically active, monitoring your blood sugar and taking medications as prescribed. Successful self-management will help you feel better and can reduce your chance of developing complications including heart disease, dental disease, eye disorders, kidney disease, nerve damage and lower leg amputation.
Doctor and hospital-run diabetes centers are very good about telling folks what they should and shouldn’t do, but it’s like being told that you should lose weight—you’ve been taught a lot of the do’s and don’ts, but it’s so hard to manage! You can learn how to control your diabetes by taking a diabetes self-management class.
A diabetes self-management program makes you more aware of diabetes, what it takes to treat it and gives you the power to control it. It helps you to better implement the education into your life and make the necessary changes to improve your lifestyle. A group program can be very beneficial because you are with people who have the same concerns, you can share your experiences and frustrations and hear answers to questions you may not have thought of yourself.
Senior Services offers a diabetes self-management program called A Sweet Life. It is provided to those who have diabetes and also those who are caring for someone with the disease. Studies have shown that six months after the workshop, participants have significant improvements in depression, symptoms of hypoglycemia, communication with physicians, healthy eating, and reading food labels. They also have significant improvements in activity level and self-confidence. At 12 months, participants continued to demonstrate improvements. Take control of your health and register for this class now. There are currently two upcoming classes. Click on the one you’d like to attend for more information.
