Join educator (and Civil War buff) Mike Trebilcock for an interactive program looking at all aspects of the American Civil War – from its causes to its legacy and memory. Anyone with an interest in the Civil War – expert and novice alike – is encouraged to attend.

The second half of the 1850s brought the United States closer to disunion as animosity between North and South grew and violence increasingly replaced compromise. In this program, we will look at the major events that moved the nation towards the brink, including Bleeding Kansas, the caning of Sen. Charles Sumner, the Dred Scott decision, the Lincoln-Douglas debates, John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, and Abraham Lincoln’s nomination as the Republican candidate for president.

NOTE: Civil War lectures will alternate every other month with new lectures on Reconstruction.
