A History of Sectional Conflict – Part I
Thurs, Mar 19 • 10:30-11:30 am • Sanford
Thurs, Mar 26 • 10:15-11:30 am • Trailside
This program will begin our study of the long-term causes of the Civil War – starting with a comparison of the antebellum societies of the North and South. Then we will look at examples of sectional conflict from the Declaration of Independence through the 1830s – including the debates over slavery at the Constitutional Convention, the War of 1812, the American System, the Missouri Compromise, the Nullification Crisis over tariffs, and the rise of the abolition movement.
Viewpoints from Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, William Lloyd Garrison, and Angelina Grimke will be shared.
NOTE: Civil War lectures will alternate every other month with new lectures on Reconstruction.
