A History of Sectional Conflict – Part 2
Thurs, May 21 • 10:30-11:30 am • Sanford
Thurs, May 28 • 10:15-11:30 am • Trailside
This program will continue our study of the long-term causes of the Civil War, focusing on the crucial years between 1830-1850. We will begin with the Nullification Crisis over tariffs and the rise of the abolition movement, then turn to the heated debates over the expansion of slavery as the nation grew westward. Should new territories like Texas, Oregon, and California allow slavery? These two decades marked a period of deepening sectional divisions and crises between North and South driven by the question of slavery.
NOTE: Civil War lectures will alternate every other month with new lectures on Reconstruction.
