Civil War and Reconstruction: Defining Citizenship: The 14th Amendment
Thurs, Aug 27 • 10:15-11:30 am • Trailside
The 14th Amendment transformed the Constitution and defined American citizenship. In this program, we will explore why Congress believed a constitutional amendment was necessary and the political battle surrounding its creation and adoption. We will focus on the amendment’s key ideas—birthright citizenship, due process, equal protection, representation – and how it sought to protect the rights of the freed people. The 14th Amendment continues to dramatically impact American law, civil rights, and the debate over the meaning of equality in the United States. *No Class at Sanford for the Summer.*
NOTE: Civil War lectures will alternate every other month with new lectures on Reconstruction.
