During the summer and fall of 1865, Reconstruction in the South saw the return of former Confederates to political power due to President Andrew Johnson’s lenient policies. His widespread pardons allowed many ex-Confederate leaders to regain control of state governments and dominate the newly formed legislatures.
In this program, we will look at how these leaders took swift action to preserve white supremacy and limit the freedoms of formerly enslaved people by passing restrictive Black Codes. Although the 13th Amendment had abolished slavery, these laws created conditions that closely resembled it. We will also discuss the role of the Freedmen’s Bureau in the post-war South. The reemergence of Confederate influence sparked outrage in the North and led to growing demands for a more aggressive approach to Reconstruction.
