Civil War and Reconstruction Southern Backlash: Racial Violence and Resistance in 1866 Thurs, Oct 15 • 10:30-11:30 am • Sanford Thurs, Oct 22 • 10:15-11:30 am • Trailside
As Congress challenged Andrew Johnson’s approach to Reconstruction and debated how to protect the rights of formerly enslaved people, violent resistance erupted in the South.
This program examines the Memphis Massacre in May and the New Orleans Massacre in July – focusing on the violence directed against African Americans and the resistance to Black freedom and political participation. These shocking events helped convince many that stronger federal protections were necessary and boosted support for the 14th Amendment and a fundamental redefinition of American citizenship and equal rights.
NOTE: Civil War lectures will alternate every other month with new lectures on Reconstruction.
