The Radical Republicans – 1865
RESCCHEDULED TO: Thurs, Dec 18 • 10:15-11:30 am • Trailside
CANCELED: Thurs, Dec 18 • 10:30-11:30 am • Sanford
As Congress reconvened in December 1865, the Radical Republicans began challenging President Andrew Johnson’s lenient Reconstruction program. Led by figures such as Thaddeus Stevens, Charles Sumner, and Benjamin Wade, they demanded stronger protections for freed people and harsher terms for the former Confederate states.
This program examines their bold vision for transforming the South, their early clashes with Johnson (and earlier, Lincoln), and the looming political struggle that will redefine the meaning of freedom, citizenship, and federal power in America.
