Civil War and Reconstruction
Join educator (and Civil War buff) Mike Trebilcock for an interactive program looking at all aspects of the American Civil War – from its causes to its legacy and memory. Anyone with an interest in the Civil War – expert and novice alike – is encouraged to attend.
Why the Civil War Still Matters
Thurs, Jan 15 • 10:30-11:30 am • Sanford
Thurs, Jan 22 • 10:15-11:30 am • Trailside
The four years of war from 1861-1865 have never really left us. Arguments over the causes and meaning of the war continue to cause political conflict and headlines. The debates over memory and monuments are sources of passion, protest, and violence. In many ways, Americans remain divided over the Civil War.
Other issues Americans debate today —federal vs. state power, racial inequality, national identity—trace directly to this era.
This introductory program kicks off a repeat of the Civil War lecture series. The series will explore the major events, people, ideas, and turning points of the Civil War.
NOTE: Civil War lectures will alternate every other month with new lectures on Reconstruction.
