The 1850s were a decade of mounting sectional conflict that steadily weakened the bonds of Union. Beginning with the Mexican War and the fierce debate over slavery’s expansion, this program traces the escalating crises – the Wilmot Proviso, the Compromise of 1850, the explosive impact of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the violence of “Bleeding Kansas.” As distrust deepened between the North and South, the compromises that had long held the nation together began to unravel. *No Class at Sanford for the Summer.*
