Death, Coffee & Cake?
Death Café Offers a Safe Place for Discussion
Tues, April 22nd • 2-3:30 pm • Trailside
At a Death Cafe people, often strangers, gather to eat cake, drink coffee and discuss death. The objective of Death Cafe is “to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.”
These discussions about death are always offered:
- On a not for profit basis
- In an accessible, respectful & confidential space
- With no intention of leading people to any conclusion, product or course of action
- Alongside refreshing drinks and nourishing food – and cake!
Death Cafe is based on the ideas of Bernard Crettaz, a Swiss sociologist who set up Cafes Mortels. Jon Underwood read about the first Cafe Mortel to take place in Paris and was immediately motivated to offer these himself. The first Death Cafe in the UK was offered in Jon’s house in September 2011 and was a wonderful occasion. After publishing a guide to holding a café, at least 100 people went on to provide Death Cafes in the U.K., the U.S., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Italy and beyond with Lizzie Miles leading the way in the United States.
At Senior Services we are proud to offer this opportunity to host an open discussion on a topic that everyone thinks about, but seldom feel welcome to discuss. Death Doula, Marilyn Jensen will be present as facilitator, but the conversation will flow from you!
