This course explores the history and development of U.S. constitutional law, with an emphasis on civil rights and civil liberties. We will examine the historical context and impact of landmark Supreme Court decisions involving the Bill of Rights, equal protection, and privacy. The goal is to gain a deeper understanding of the Constitution and the Supreme Court’s role in interpreting it. Throughout the course, we will connect these ideas to current events and our own experiences, preconceptions, and concerns.

Dr. Robert W. Lane is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Saginaw Valley State University where he was a popular and award-winning instructor of American government, constitutional law, and civil liberties for over 34 years.

Sept 11 • Founding Documents
An examination of these three Founding Documents: the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution.

Sept 18 • The Supreme Court
An examination of key concepts and institutional features pertaining to the U.S. Supreme Court: judicial appointments, life terms, judicial review, and standards of review.

Sept 25 • First Amendment: Freedom of Religion
An examination of some key Supreme Court decisions pertaining to two provisions in the 1st Amendment regarding religious freedom: the establishment clause and the free exercise clause.
