The nonprofit TED, standing for Technology, Entertainment, Design, offers knowledge and inspiration from the world’s foremost thinkers under the moniker “ideas worth spreading” free online. These talks give access to the world’s most inspiring voices, discussing a vast range of themes. Join educator Mike Trebilcock on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month during lunch to watch a TED talk (typically 10-20 minutes each) and participate in lively discussion about the ideas presented.
How ethics can help you make better decisions
What would Immanuel Kant say about a fender bender? In a surprisingly funny trip through the teachings of some of history’s great philosophers, TV writer and producer Michael Schur talks through how to confront life’s moral dilemmas — and shows how understanding ethical theories can help you make better, kinder decisions.
A brain implant that turns your thoughts into text
What if you could control digital devices using just the power of thought? That’s the incredible promise behind the Stentrode — an implantable brain-computer interface that collects and wirelessly transmits information directly from the brain, without the need for open surgery. Entrepreneur Tom Oxley describes the intricacies of this breakthrough technology.
The case for a 4-day work week
The traditional approach to work needs a redesign, says economist Juliet Schor. She’s leading four-day work week trials in countries like the US and Ireland, and the results so far have been overwhelmingly positive: from increased employer and customer satisfaction to revenue growth and lower turnover.
The secret ingredients of great hospitality
Restaurateur Will Guidara’s life changed when he decided to serve a two-dollar hot dog in his fancy four-star restaurant, creating a personalized experience for some out-of-towners craving authentic New York City street food. In this funny and heartwarming talk, he shares three steps to crafting truly memorable moments centered in human connection.
