The presidential election of 1864 took place in the midst of extreme national uncertainty and chaos. Voters in the Union states were deciding the momentous questions of continuing the war or negotiating for peace, of ending or continuing slavery, and the direction of post-war American society.
Republicans and some War Democrats joined together as the National Union Party to nominate Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, the military governor of Tennessee. The Democrats chose the former commander of the Army of the Potomac, George McClellan, to lead their ticket.
Events during the summer of 1864 had convinced Lincoln he would lose, but some key military successes turned the campaign around along with divisions in the Democratic Party over the “peace plank” approved at their convention. In this program, we will examine contemporary political cartoons to highlight the issues and results of the election.
