The Thirteenth Amendment

On January 31, 1865, the House of Representatives passed the 13th Amendment – the amendment to abolish slavery everywhere in the United States. President Lincoln symbolically signed the amendment and then sent it to the states for ratification.
In this program we will discuss the 13-month battle in Congress to pass the 13th Amendment which began on December 14, 1863, when House Republican James Ashley of Ohio introduced it. The proposal to ban slavery won early approval in the Senate, but was the subject of intense debate and politicking in the House. We will examine the role played by President Lincoln along with key Representatives and Senators who got it passed.
