Oct 24 • 12-1 pm • Online
The nonprofit TED, standing for Technology, Entertainment, Design, offers knowledge and inspiration from the world’s foremost thinkers under the moniker “ideas worth spreading” free online. These talks give access to the world’s most inspiring voices, discussing a vast range of themes. Join educator Mike Trebilcock on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month during lunch to watch a TED talk (typically 10-20 minutes each) and participate in lively discussion about the ideas presented.

He explores why data will be the secret weapon in this uncharted landscape and emphasizes the need to consider national security when developing new tech.
The growing megafire crisis – and how to contain it
Megafires are becoming more frequent worldwide, wreaking havoc on landscapes and communities – and fire experts say the problem is only going to get worse. George T. Whitesides is focused on fighting these devastating natural disasters through innovative technologies and intentional changes to how we build communities.

But without privacy protections, your innermost thoughts, emotions and desires could be at risk of exploitation, says neurotech ethicist Nita Farahany. She details some of the field’s promising potential uses and shares concerns about who collects our brain data and how they plan to use it.

Based on her work for a CIA task force aimed at predicting civil wars, political scientist Barbara F. Walter examines the rise in extremism and threats to democracies around the globe — and paints an unsettling picture of the increasing likelihood of a second civil war in the United States.
