The nonprofit TED, standing for Technology, Entertainment, Design, offers knowledge and inspiration from the world’s foremost thinkers under the moniker “ideas worth spreading,” free online. These talks give access to the world’s most inspiring voices, discussing a vast range of themes. Join educator Mike Trebilcock on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month during lunch to watch a TED talk (typically 10-20 minutes each) and participate in lively discussion about the ideas presented.
3 new ways to kill mosquitoes
We can use a mosquito’s own instincts against her. In a rather unforgettable presentation, Bart Knols demos the imaginative solutions his team is developing to fight malaria — including Limburger cheese and a deadly pill.
Why I study the most dangerous animal on earth – mosquitoes
What do we really know about mosquitoes? Fredros Okumu catches and studies these disease-carrying insects for a living — with the hope of crashing their populations. Join Okumu for a tour of the frontlines of mosquito research, as he details some of the unconventional methods his team at the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania have developed to target what has been described as the most dangerous animal on earth.
How to design mosquitoes out of cities
As cities adopt greener, more sustainable designs, there’s risk of a dangerous and unwelcome tenant moving in: mosquitoes. Researcher Cameron Webb explains what urban planners and the general public need to understand about mosquitoes — the deadliest animals on the planet — in order to avoid future outbreaks of disease carried by these pesky insects.
