Tuesdays with TED
Peace on Earth, Goodwill to All
Dec 13 • 12-1 pm
In-person at Trailside
*No Online via Zoom/Dial-in option this month.
The nonprofit TED, standing for Technology, Entertainment, Design, offers knowledge and inspiration from the world’s foremost thinkers under the moniker “ideas worth spreading” free online. These talks give access to the world’s most inspiring voices, discussing a vast range of themes. Join educator Mike Trebilcock on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month during lunch to watch a TED talk (typically 10-20 minutes each) and participate in lively discussion about the ideas presented.
The profound power of gratitude and living eulogies
Why do we often wait so long to recognize each other’s gifts? Why are the truest compliments for the people we love often said only after they’re no longer around to hear and savor them? Andrea Driessen makes the case for writing eulogies for the living, sharing the power of “Gracenotes” to offer connection on a deeper level and dispel any regrets of waiting until a loved one’s death to appreciate their presence in your life.
How compassion could save your strained relationships
When personal relationships and ideological differences collide, the result can lead to strained relations — or even years of silence and distance. Actor Betty Hart offers an alternative to cold shoulders and haughty hellos: compassion, and a chance for growth and change instead of losing important time with loved ones.
We’re experiencing an empathy shortage but we can fix it together
“Being a psychologist studying empathy today is a little bit like being a climatologist studying the polar ice caps,” says psychology professor Jamil Zaki. That’s because according to research, our collective empathy is eroding. But there is good news: Empathy is a skill, it can be built, and he explains how he — and others — are doing just that.
