by Allison Rossi Utter, Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager
This February, we proudly recognize Dick Sipp as our Volunteer of the Month. He is a dedicated transportation driver whose kindness, reliability, and steady presence have made a meaningful impact since he first joined us in 2021.
Dick lives close to our main building and had long been aware of our transportation program. When he retired, he knew he wanted to stay active and give back—and since he’s always loved being behind the wheel, volunteering as a driver felt like the perfect fit. Before retirement, Dick spent many years in the air rather than on the road, serving as both a commercial and military pilot. Whether flying or driving, helping people reach their destinations has always been second nature to him.
For Dick, what makes this volunteer role so rewarding is the “immediate gratification” of getting clients where they need to go. He says the individuals he drives are always gracious and appreciative, and their gratitude motivates him to keep showing up. “You really feel like you’re making a difference,” he shared.
Originally from the Chicago area, Dick and his wife, Vicki, first retired to Georgia, until life offered an even better destination. When their daughter had a baby more than 20 years ago, the Sipps moved to Midland to be closer to family, and it’s been home ever since. Dick and Vicki have been married for 59 years; their family includes two daughters and two granddaughters. Before retirement, Dick built a successful career with the Ford Motor Company. When he’s not volunteering, Dick enjoys spending time on his hobbies, especially working on his old car, attending car shows, and volunteering at Barstow.
Transportation drivers provide crucial rides to older adults who may have limited options for getting around. Whether it’s a trip to the doctor’s office or the grocery store, our trained volunteers offer a friendly and reliable “arm to lean on.” Reservations in advance are required, with medical appointments given priority.
