Senior Services is proud to recognize Pat Baringer, aka “Pat who laughs”, as the January Volunteer of the Month for her dedication to the Sanford Activity and Dining Center. Pat has volunteered since 2014. Sanford Site Manager, Dawn Powell shares, “I have tried for 11 years to nominate Pat, and she has always declined. When I was asked for my last submission for volunteer of the month, without hesitation, I knew it had to be Pat!”
Pat began coming to the center after her father passed, bringing her mother for support. Her involvement quickly grew, including serving 12 years as President of the Jack and Jill’s advisory board. She walks in the Founders Day parade each year, helps decorate the float, and promotes the center with enthusiasm. Dawn says, “You cannot step foot in the center without Pat hugging you and helping you feel welcome.” Pat helps daily with assisting participants into the building, getting their meals, and knows their drink orders by heart.
Born and raised in Sanford, Pat has lived in the community her entire life. Most of the people who come to the center are lifelong friends and neighbors she grew up with — something she treasures deeply. “I enjoy being with people,” Pat says. “It’s very rewarding.” Dawn states, “Pat’s inner and physical strength is something to behold! We love her laughter. She is our unofficial Mayor of the Sanford Senior Center!”
Pat and her husband, Mark, have been married for 54 years and have two sons, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She is a retired school aide and enjoys rock hunting in her free time.
The Activity and Dining Centers are wonderful places where active older adults gather to dine together, socialize and participate in a variety of activities and unique events. The Sanford Activity and Dining Center is grateful for Pat’s compassion, commitment, and joy. Congratulations, Pat, and thank you for all you do!
