Always ready to go the extra mile, transportation driver Jim Hemeyer is our May Volunteer of the Month!
“Jim is an excellent choice for Volunteer of the Month,” says Trish Brown, Transportation Manager. “He’s been an invaluable help as we’ve faced challenges with scheduling wheelchair van drivers. Jim consistently steps up, adding extra hours to the schedule and filling in whenever he’s able.”
Jim has been a dedicated volunteer with Senior Services since May 2015. He began as a Friendly Visitor and helped deliver Meals on Wheels during the COVID pandemic. “Being a transportation driver is very flexible,” Jim shares. “There’s no problem when I need time off.” To date, Jim has generously donated over 1,542 hours of his time. In the summer, he drives all day on Thursdays and often fills in during the winter months. “My father was a volunteer in Illinois and drove until he was 85. This service is all about the clients. It’s about making connections. The clients are the best. They are so friendly and appreciative,” Jim reflects. Trish adds, “Jim is incredibly caring and always keeps us informed of any client-related issues.”
Originally from Illinois, Jim moved to Midland for an engineering job with Dow. He retired for the first time in 2005, returned twice as a contractor, and finally retired in 2015. Jim and his wife, Anna, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They met through the Young People’s Business Group during a dance at Blue Light. Together, they have three daughters and seven grandchildren. When he’s not volunteering with Senior Services, Jim enjoys cycling and singing in his church choir.
Transportation drivers provide vital rides for older adults in Senior Services vehicles, offering a friendly “arm to lean on” service throughout Midland County. Whether it’s a trip to the doctor or a visit to the grocery store, our trained volunteer drivers are here to help. Advance reservations are required, with medical appointments given priority.

Jim, you are a cherished member of our volunteer family. Thank you for your dedication and your generous spirit! Congratulations on being named Volunteer of the Month!
