by Allison Rossi Utter, Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager
We are proud to recognize Mike Fazio, a dedicated Transportation Driver who has been helping community members get where they need to go since 2011.
Mike first began volunteering with Team Handyman (now called Senior Safety Team) before learning there was a need for transportation drivers. From the beginning, Mike arranged to volunteer during the winter months so he could spend summers doing one of the things he loves most – golfing. More than a decade later, he keeps that same schedule. Transportation Manager, Trish Brown, shared her appreciation for Mike’s dedication: “Mike has been a dedicated and dependable driver for many years, especially during the winter months when we are short on drivers. He is very conscientious with all the riders and attentive to their individual needs. We deeply appreciate his commitment and the care he shows to those he serves.”
Mike and his wife, Louise, moved from Massachusetts in 1973. They raised a son and daughter in Midland and now have three grandchildren. Mike worked as a Chemist in the Research Department at Dow before retiring in 2010. After retirement, he chose to stay active and give back through volunteer work. “After retiring I knew I wanted to do something to give back to my community,” Mike said. “My favorite thing about volunteering at Senior Services is meeting the people, having conversations with them, and learning their backgrounds. People really appreciate the transportation services.”
In addition to driving, Mike volunteers at his church and serves as a tax preparer through AARP each year. Mike encourages others to consider volunteering as well. “I would tell someone thinking about volunteering to just try it. You can always say no after you try it, but it is simple enough,” he said. “Senior Services does a great job.”
