May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a meaningful reminder that emotional well-being is just as important as physical health, especially for adults aged 60 and older. While later life can bring wisdom and fulfillment, it can also come with challenges that impact mental health in real ways.
Life transitions such as retirement, the loss of a loved one, changes in mobility, or managing chronic health conditions can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety, or depression. For some older adults, reduced social interaction or difficulty accessing resources may increase the risk of a mental health crisis. Recognizing these challenges early, and knowing where to turn for support, can make all the difference.
At Senior Services of Midland County, we are committed to helping older adults not just cope, but truly thrive. Through a wide range of programs and services, we aim to support both mental and emotional well-being in our community.
We proudly partner with a local agency to offer confidential counseling sessions with licensed professionals at our Trailside location, making it easier to access support in a familiar and welcoming setting.
We also host a variety of monthly support groups, providing education and connection for those navigating shared experiences:
- Blind and Low Vision Support
- Care Partner Support for caregivers
- Parkinson’s Disease Support with MyMichigan
- Stroke Support Group
- TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) for healthy living
These groups offer a safe space to learn, share, and build supportive relationships.
In addition, our Care Coordination services help older adults connect with resources that reduce stress and promote independence. Our Senior Safety Team can assist with simple but important home modifications, like installing grab bars or checking smoke detectors, to create a safer, more secure living environment.
Equally important is staying socially connected. We offer meals and activities at our five Activity & Dining Centers throughout Midland County, where older adults can enjoy nutritious food, participate in programs, and build meaningful friendships.
Need a ride to access these valuable services and supports? Our Transportation Services can help alleviate stress by offering affordable rides Monday-Friday to help you get where you need to go.
If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, help is available. By dialing 988, you can connect with trained counselors for immediate support. To learn more about local services, call us at 989-633-3700 or visit www.SeniorServicesMidland.org.
This May, let’s continue to look out for one another and remember: support, connection, and care are always within reach.
