Gaylord and Sharon Cheney are the November Volunteers of the Month for their assistance at the Sanford Activity and Dining Center. When Gaylord and Sharon first contacted the Sanford Center, they asked one simple question: “How can we help?” That moment marked the start of a remarkable journey of service, friendship, and community impact. Since then, they’ve become vital to the center’s daily life, contributing to every major event from proms to parades, and bringing energy, warmth, and dedication to everything they do. Whether lending a hand, joining activities, or offering a kind word, they embody the spirit of community. “They are a dynamic duo, and Sanford is truly blessed to have them,” says Site Manager Dawn Powell. “They give so much of themselves, not just in time and effort, but in spirit.”
In addition to their work at the center, Gaylord and Sharon also serve as dedicated Meals on Wheels drivers, often picking up extra routes when needed. For them, visiting with clients is the highlight of their day. “Clients sometimes don’t see anyone else and they rely on us,” Sharon shares. Their compassion and reliability ensure that each delivery is not just a meal, but a moment of human connection.
Originally from South Dakota, Gaylord and Sharon moved to Midland in 2010 before settling in Sanford in 2019. Though they weren’t quite ready to think of themselves as “seniors” when they first joined, Sharon encourages others to give the center a try. “We’re content here,” she says with a smile. Married for 49 years, they have four children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. When they aren’t volunteering, they enjoy working around their home and spending time landscaping.
Our five Activity and Dining Centers are gathering places for active older adults to dine together, socialize and participate in a variety of activities and special events. The Sanford Center is managed by Dawn Powell. For more information on activities call the Center at (989) 687-7888 or check the latest issue of Prime Times News.
The Meals on Wheels program provides delicious, nutritious, well-balanced meals, planned and approved by a Registered Dietitian. Eligibility is determined by a Care Coordinator. Meals on Wheels are mainly delivered by volunteers from four of our Activity and Dining Centers, covering the whole county. For volunteer opportunities, call Allison at (989) 633-3741.
Thank you, Gaylord and Sharon Cheney, for everything you do. Your kindness, commitment, and joy touch the lives of so many. We are proud and honored to recognize you as our Volunteers of the Month. Congratulations!
