by Allison Rossi Utter, Volunteer & Community Outreach Manager
Marilyn Greene, October Volunteer of the Month, is a volunteer for the Mills Center.
In 2013, she began volunteering as a Transportation Driver due to her sister working in that department. She started volunteering at Mills the following year. Natalie Tucker, Mills Center Manager says, “Marilyn is very active at the Center. She is always willing to help with whatever needs to be done. She is a blessing and I don’t know what I would do without her.” Marilyn helps clean up and sets up during the summer after the kids’ camp has been completed. Natalie, tearing up, explains, “The Center can be in shambles after the camp; Marilyn just comes in and does what needs to be done to get it back in order. She is a hard worker and never complains.” She is the Secretary for the Mills Friendly Folks Advisory Board. Marilyn also helps out at her church, Dahlia Hill and the North Midland Family Center. She has helped with food distributions, special events like Touch-a-Truck, and dress giveaways for prom and homecoming. Marilyn clarifies, “I have been very blessed and I want to give back to my community. Any day I can help someone, I call that a good day.”
Marilyn was born and raised in Midland. She has been married to her husband, James, for 28 years. She has five children, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was a clerk at the United States Post Office for 44 years. When Marilyn isn’t helping others, she enjoys gardening and puzzles.
There are five Activity and Dining Centers throughout Midland County. The Centers are gathering places for active older adults to dine together, socialize, and participate in a variety of activities and special events. The Mills Center located in the Greater Midland North Family Center and managed by Natalie Tucker, is noted for its educational classes and group exercises. Volunteers are always welcome! For more information on activities, call the center at 989-282-1622 or check the latest issue of Midland Prime Times. For volunteer opportunities, call Allison Rossi Utter at 989-633-3741.
Thank you, Marilyn, for your wonderful volunteer spirit and congratulations on being chosen as the Volunteer of the Month!
We Need Volunteer Helpers!
Senior Services is always in need of volunteers. If you choose to volunteer with us, you will be embarking on a rewarding adventure that will have a huge impact on the older adults of Midland County! We hope you’ll consider joining our community of experienced, trusted and valued volunteers.
Our current areas of greatest need are:
- Transportation Drivers – Our volunteer drivers provide “arm to lean on” door-to-door service throughout the entire county of Midland making it easier for older adults to get to doctor’s appointments, a ride to the grocery store, and more.
- Friendly Visitors/Shopping Volunteers – Visit, call, shop and more for an older adult in need. This is a great opportunity for working people and is flexibly scheduled.
- Senior Safety Team – Assist older adults in keeping their homes in a safe and secure condition by performing jobs and services. Time commitment would be 2-4 work requests per month. Mileage is reimbursed.
- Meals on Wheels in Greendale and Coleman routes – Routes available M-F from 10 am-1 pm. Mileage is reimbursed and you’ll receive a FREE lunch!
