We are thrilled to recognize Rebecca Malkin as Senior Services’ Volunteer of the Month for October! Rebecca has truly gone above and beyond in her role as a Friendly Visitor and Shopper, offering not only her time but also her warmth, compassion, and steadfast dedication to older adults in Midland County. Our Friendly Visitors and Shoppers provide something truly invaluable—meaningful companionship and practical support that help our clients maintain their independence and dignity. It takes a special person to step into this role with grace, consistency, and care. Rebecca is exactly that kind of person—and more!
Rebecca has been part of the Senior Services volunteer family since August 2014, initially supporting the Sharing Tree program. Over a year and a half ago, she was matched with an older adult for regular visits, and the bond they’ve built since then speaks volumes about her heart and commitment. “I started volunteering because I wanted to pay it forward,” says Rebecca. “Volunteering is a good use of my time. It helps my peers. I am older myself and may need services at some point.” Rebecca’s client had this heartfelt praise to share, “She is beyond wonderful. She is a jewel that goes above and beyond to help me.”
Originally from Shiawassee County, Rebecca and her husband of 57 years, Steve, made Midland their home in 1977 for 13 years then moved to Sanford. Together, they’ve raised a family that includes a daughter, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Rebecca’s career journey included time at the Voluntary Action Center, Dow Chemical, and as a paraprofessional with Midland Public Schools. In her free time, she enjoys reading and crocheting.
Many older adults in our community need the kind of connection and support Rebecca offers. Whether it’s help with shopping or simply sharing a friendly conversation over coffee, these visits are tailored to each client’s needs and interests. Friendly Visitors often share hobbies like reading or playing cards, offering not just help, but true companionship. Just one to two hours a week can make a world of difference, and mileage is reimbursed.
If Rebecca’s story inspires you—and we hope it does—consider becoming a volunteer yourself. You can make a lasting impact on the life of an older adult right here in Midland County. To learn more about this or other opportunities, please contact Senior Services at (989) 633-3700, or reach out directly to Allison, at (989) 633-3741 to become a volunteer.
Thank you, Rebecca, for your incredible service, your kind spirit, and your unwavering dedication. Congratulations on being named our October Volunteer of the Month-you are truly a treasure!
