Each May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the celebration of Older Americans Month (OAM), a nationwide observance dedicated to recognizing the contributions of older adults, highlighting aging trends, and reaffirming our commitment to supporting seniors. This year’s theme, Flip the Script on Aging, encourages a shift in how society views and discusses aging, urging communities to challenge outdated stereotypes and embrace a more inclusive, positive narrative about growing older.
The history of Older Americans Month dates back to 1963 when President John F. Kennedy designated May as Senior Citizens Month. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter expanded the observance to Older Americans Month, acknowledging the value and diversity of older Americans. Since then, the month has served as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of older adults, as well as to raise awareness about the issues they face.
In 2025, the theme Flip the Script on Aging invites individuals to rethink aging as a time of possibility, exploration, and connection. It encourages communities to offer resources and opportunities that help older adults remain active, engaged, and empowered, whether through lifelong learning, physical activities, or volunteerism.
To bring awareness and promote the positive aspects of aging, people can participate in local events, volunteer, or organize educational campaigns about the benefits of aging. Additionally, individuals can help by mentoring or creating inclusive spaces for older adults to share their wisdom and experiences.

Older Americans Month is a time to reflect on how society views aging and to work together in creating a future where older adults are valued, respected, and supported.
