Are you spending much of your time and energy caring for a loved one who has physical or cognitive challenges that make them dependent on you? Do you find yourself feeling exhausted, frustrated, helpless, guilty or alone? Is all this caregiving putting your own physical and emotional well-being at risk?
Senior Services offers an evidence-based class called Powerful Tools for Caregivers that can help! In six weekly classes, caregivers develop a wealth of self-care tools to reduce personal stress, change negative self-talk, communicate their needs to family members and healthcare or service providers, communicate more effectively in challenging situations, recognize the messages in their emotions, deal with difficult feelings and make tough caregiving decisions. Class participants also receive a copy of The Caregiver Helpbook, developed specifically for the class.
The curriculum has been shown to improve:
- Self-Care Behaviors such as increased exercise, relaxation and medical check-ups
- Management of Emotions like reduced guilt, anger and depression
- Self-Efficacy—increased confidence in coping with caregiving demands
- Use of Community Resources—increased utilization of local services
Through numerous collaborations with health and human service organizations across the country, Powerful Tools for Caregivers has reached over 70,000 family caregivers. This wonderful program can make a positive difference in your life. The next class begins August 22 and will take place on Mondays for six weeks from 1:00-3:30 at Trailside Center, 4700 Dublin Ave. Monday, September 5 is Labor Day so that class will be moved to Friday, September 9th.
