If you’ve attended activities or meals at Trailside Activity and Dining Center, chances are you’ve seen Bob and Sherry Weaver. Their warm smiles, generous spirit, and active lifestyle have made them familiar faces at the Center and their story is one worth sharing.
Bob and Sherry first discovered the Center through yoga. “I was looking for some males in yoga classes,” Bob laughs. “And when we learned the instructor was male, we thought we’d give it a try.” The class turned out to be just what they were looking for, and before long, they began staying for lunch afterward. What began as a single class has since grown into a routine that combines exercise, social connection, and good food – a winning combination.
The couple’s story stretches back decades, beginning when they both worked at Dow Corning. Bob grew up in Midland after moving here at age five. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree in Business/Finance from Michigan State University and later completed his MBA at Central Michigan University. Sherry pursued her undergraduate degree in Business at Northwood University. Together, they have built a blended family of six children, twelve grandchildren, and are excitedly awaiting the arrival of their first great-grandchild this November.
Beyond enjoying the activities, Bob and Sherry contribute in meaningful ways. Each week they bring produce to the Center to donate, a thoughtful act that reflects their care for the community and their desire to give back.
Both are passionate about hobbies that keep them moving, creating, and growing. Before joining Trailside, Bob attended the Sanford facility for nearly 20 years, drawn to the wood carving group. He started with simple bird carvings but over time developed the skill to take on more intricate and challenging projects. The couple also enjoys gardening, both flowers and vegetables, which keeps them outdoors and active.
Exercise has always been a constant in their lives. They began yoga about five years ago but have been lifelong exercisers. Living on the Rail Trail makes it easy to keep up with their daily walks, a full mile every day. At 89 years old, Bob’s consistency is especially inspiring.
Staying sharp mentally is just as important. Bob plays regular chess matches with his 12-year-old grandson. “Of all the years we’ve played, I’ve only won two games against him,” Bob jokes, sharing the story with his characteristic humor.
When asked what life lessons they’d pass along to younger generations, the Weavers keep their message simple: eat good, whole foods, exercise often, be social, support your family, and always keep humor in your life. “We both lost about 20 pounds just from eating better,” Sherry explains. Bob adds, “We need more gym classes!” And together, they emphasize: “Humor is key!”
Bob and Sherry Weaver truly embody the spirit of Senior Services. They stay active, share generously, and find joy in both family and community. Their story is a beautiful reminder that at any age, life is richer when we move, connect, and laugh together.
