Loneliness is something many people experience, but it is often misunderstood. We tend to assume that lonely people live alone, don’t have many friends, or simply aren’t outgoing. The truth is much different.
Research shows that loneliness is not about how many people are around you. It is about feeling like no one truly understands what you’re going through. You can be surrounded by family, friends, or coworkers and still feel alone.
Life has a way of bringing challenges that can leave us feeling disconnected. Health concerns, the loss of a loved one, retirement, caregiving responsibilities, or major life changes can all make it harder to find the sense of belonging we all need. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in three adults report feeling lonely, and one in four say they lack the social and emotional support they need.
The good news is that loneliness does not have to be permanent.
At Senior Services, we believe meaningful connections can change lives. Whether you are looking for new friendships, a fun activity, or simply a welcoming place to spend an afternoon, our five Activity & Dining Centers offer opportunities to connect with others who are ready to welcome you.
Stop in for lunch, join a fitness class, try woodcarving or crafting, play cards or bingo, work on a puzzle, enjoy music, tend a garden, or discover one of our many special events. Our friendly Site Managers are happy to introduce you to others and help you find activities that match your interests. Sometimes all it takes is one conversation to help you feel like you belong.
Another wonderful way to build connections is through volunteering. Helping others has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and create a stronger sense of purpose. Studies have also linked volunteering with lower rates of depression, healthier blood pressure, and better overall well-being. Just as importantly, it introduces you to people who share your desire to make a difference in the community.
If you or someone you know has been feeling isolated, consider taking that first step. Visit one of our Activity & Dining Centers, take a tour, enjoy a meal, or ask about volunteer opportunities. You may come looking for something to do, but you might leave with something even more valuable: new friendships and a renewed sense of belonging.
