Many people begin volunteering because they want to help others. What they often discover along the way is that volunteering gives something meaningful back to them, too.
Whether you are newly retired, looking for a purposeful way to spend your summer break, or simply hoping to stay active and connected, volunteering can bring surprising benefits to your health, happiness, and sense of purpose.
Research continues to show that people who volunteer regularly often experience lower stress levels, stronger social connections, and improved emotional well-being. Some studies have even linked volunteering with lower blood pressure and longer life expectancy among adults over age 50.
Why does helping others make such a difference in our own lives? Part of it comes from staying connected. Volunteering introduces us to new people, shared experiences, and meaningful relationships. It can ease feelings of loneliness and provide a sense of belonging—something many people miss after retirement or during life transitions.
Volunteering also gives us opportunities to use our talents and life experience in ways that matter. Whether you are delivering a meal, providing a ride, visiting with someone who lives alone, or lending a hand with home safety projects, even a few hours a week can make a lasting impact.
For school employees, teachers, and support staff enjoying a summer break, volunteering can also be a rewarding way to stay engaged and connected to the community while making a real difference close to home.
At Senior Services of Midland County, volunteers play an essential role in helping older adults remain independent, safe, and connected. Right now, there is an especially urgent need for Meals on Wheels delivery drivers for all weekday shifts.
Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver more than just a meal. They provide a friendly smile, a brief safety check, and a reassuring connection for older adults throughout Midland County. Shifts are available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mileage is reimbursed, and volunteers receive a free lunch while helping neighbors in need.
Additional volunteer opportunities include:
- Transportation Drivers — Help older adults get to medical appointments, grocery stores, and other essential destinations throughout Midland County.
- Friendly Visitors and Shopping Volunteers — Spend time visiting, calling, or assisting with errands for older adults who could use extra support and companionship.
- Senior Safety Team — Help improve the safety and accessibility of older adults’ homes through simple but meaningful projects.
The good news is that volunteering does not require endless free time. Studies suggest that even a few hours each month can have positive effects on both physical and emotional health.
Most importantly, volunteering reminds us that we still have something valuable to offer, and that our presence, kindness, and time truly matter.
If you are looking for a meaningful way to stay active, connected, and involved this summer, we invite you to join our team of trusted and valued volunteers.
