Sharon Olmsted, April Volunteer of the Month, is a site volunteer for the Coleman Center.
“I could not ask for a better volunteer. Sharon is very committed,” comments Tracey Wright, Coleman Center Site Manager. “She always jumps to help out with anything. Sharon helps with Meals on Wheels apartment deliveries, decorating the Center, cleaning and setting tables along with stuffing Meals on Wheels bags with cards. The list goes on and on.”
Originally from Jackson Michigan, Sharon moved to Coleman 65 years ago with her husband. She has been attending Coleman Center for over 20 years. She began as a cook for the agency. Sharon also worked at Sid’s Party Store in Midland along with The Coleman Restaurant. Sharon drove a school bus in Sanford for 12 years as well. She has 4 children, many grandchildren, great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren! She enjoys spending time with her family. Her other hobbies include crocheting, knitting and Diamond Art. Sharon says, “I like making things for people. I give all my art away.”
Sharon serves as the Friendly Folks Senior Advisory Board Treasurer. She compiles the accounting report, sells 50/50 tickets and goes to the bank as part of the Treasurer’s responsibilities. Volunteering keeps her busy and connected to people. Sharon explains, “I don’t like to be alone. I enjoy volunteering at Coleman and being around people.”
There are five Activity and Dining Centers throughout Midland County. The Centers are gathering places for active older adults to dine together, socialize and participate in a variety of activities and special events. The Coleman Center, managed by Tracey Wright, is noted for their Daily Coffee Socials, puzzles, cards, billiards and games. Volunteers are always welcome! For more information on activities call the center at 989-465-6216 or check the latest issue of Midland Prime Times. For volunteer opportunities, call Allison Rossi Utter at 989-633-3741.
Thank you Sharon for your wonderful volunteer spirit and congratulations on being chosen as the Volunteer of the Month!
Current Volunteer Needs
Senior Services is in great need of Friendly Visitors and Shopping volunteers. Case Managers request volunteer visitors or shoppers for older adults who may be isolated, homebound, or unable to drive. Visits are tailored to the needs, interests and availability of the volunteer. Usually one to two hours per week is anticipated, and mileage is reimbursed. This is a great opportunity for working people.
We are also in need of Meals on Wheels drivers in Coleman & Greendale, Team Handyman, Transportation drivers, and Activity & Dining Centers/Seasons Entertainers (Do you play an instrument? Magic? Puppets?).
If you choose to volunteer with us, you will be embarking on a rewarding adventure that will have a huge impact on the older adults of Midland County! And you will join one of the finest groups of people we know – our experienced, trusted and valued volunteers!
