This month, we are pleased to recognize Tim Doil as our Volunteer of the Month for his dedicated service as a Friendly Visitor volunteer since 2015. Over the years, he has supported at least fifteen clients, offering companionship, conversation, and a caring presence to those who may otherwise feel isolated.
Kim Short, Care Coordinator, shared: “This client does not have any family contact and had become increasingly isolated. Tim’s visits have given him something to look forward to. The client mentioned how Tim is a great listener and lets him ‘go on’ about things most people do not want to hear about. His compassion and caring have truly made a meaningful impact in the client’s life.”
Tim’s motivation to volunteer is deeply personal. After serving as the primary caregiver for his mother who had dementia, he understands the challenges caregivers face. “It can be a lonely job at times, especially when you have no supports in place,” Tim says. He adds, “I always enjoy visiting with clients, listening to their stories, and brightening their day with simple conversation.”
Tim is a Midland native and worked in security at the Dow Chemical Company’s Bay City refinery site before retiring. He remains active in the community through MCTV, the American Legion, and past service as a volunteer firefighter. In his free time, he enjoys caring for his property, traveling, and following the stock market.
Friendly Visitors and Shoppers provide social support and shopping assistance to older adults in Midland County, helping them maintain independence. Volunteers offer companionship, assist with errands, and engage in shared activities like reading or playing cards. Visits are flexible based on client needs and volunteer availability, typically lasting 1–2 hours per week, with mileage reimbursed.
